A New Combined Program for Medical Students: G.E.R.M.

Share this post:

The IDSA Foundation and HIV Medicine Association are pleased to announce the launch of its newest grant program designed to help increase the pipeline of physicians entering the fields of ID and HIV medicine.

G.E.R.M.: Grants for Emerging Researcher/Clinician Mentorship Program will provide medical students with the opportunity to apply for grant support to help cover the cost of a mentored clinical learning and/or research project for up to a year, on infectious diseases-related topics including HIV under the mentorship of an IDSA or HIVMA member. This program will replace the IDSA Medical Scholars and HIVMA Medical Students Programs.

G.E.R.M. welcomes applications from first- second- or third-year medical students and those in combined degree programs including MD/MPH and MD/PhD attending an accredited allopathic or osteopathic medical school in the U.S.

U.S. citizens and permanent residents pursuing medical school outside of the U.S. (including Caribbean and off-shore institutions) are also eligible to apply. These students should be interested in pursuing specialty training in the U.S.

Research, clinical training, medical education activities, quality improvement and antimicrobial stewardship projects focused on ID/HIV, will be considered, and can include epidemiology, microbiology, diagnosis, treatment and prevention activities.

G.E.R.M. is a competitive grant opportunity and up to 60 projects are expected to be funded in 2019.

The call for applications is now open and the deadline to apply is February 18, 2019. Notifications will be made in March 2019. Applications will be reviewed and scored by a joint IDSA Foundation and HIVMA Review Committee. Awardees receive a $4,000 stipend per year and depending on the availability of funding may apply for additional funding to extend their project. Students receive free membership in IDSA and HIVMA.
